Going through customs

Back in America. Before I boarded, my nearly 8-year-old daughter said "I love you" on the phone, heh, and I was a bit dizzy all the way.

At customs I was checked again on how much cash I was carrying. A bit odd: in all these years of coming and going I'd never been checked, and this time I was checked twice in a row, leaving America and entering America. I don't know whether it's a coincidence or whether something has changed? Fortunately I've always been quite careful and never carry much cash, so it was fine.

This time I went back to China via Hawaii. When leaving, a colleague traveling with me and I were both checked on how much cash we had, and my colleague turned out to have just over the limit. Under American rules, if you carry cash over the limit when leaving or entering and don't declare it, the money found is confiscated. At first I was a bit curious to see how the American officers would actually handle it. In the end, perhaps because my colleague was a tourist, they just gave a warning, but next time might be different.

Overall, the attitude of American customs officers is OK: not good, but not bad either.

Chinese customs officers' attitude seems to have improved a great deal these years. It feels better than America's now.

As I recall, the most unpleasant place to go through customs was Macau, but that was many years ago. I haven't been to Macau since leaving Zhongshan in 1995.

The most memorable was the Philippines: I was actually asked for a tip (I haven't been there for many years).
