This is a question that easily confuses people.

My understanding is that the right thing generally refers to matters of principle, and is often expressed in terms of what the wrong thing is.

For example, lying is wrong, and so on.

So doing the right thing in practice often becomes not doing the wrong thing.

For example, not doing things you don't understand, and so on.

The "stop doing list" often found in so-called "great companies" probably refers to exactly this.
