Omaha(2)

Omaha (2)

My schedule is a bit messed up today: I fell asleep at 6 in the afternoon and slept until after 11, so I had to get up.

On this trip to Omaha I had a car accident. The whole handling process was a bit interesting, so I'll write it up to share with everyone.

We got to Omaha after 5 in the afternoon. Off the plane, we got in the car and immediately headed for the hotel, but unexpectedly, right at the airport exit, we were hit by a car coming from the side (the fault was mine).

Fortunately we were driving a Ford SUV, sturdy enough, and neither car was going fast, so it seemed nobody was hurt, but the other driver seemed to have had a fright.

Since I knew we were all fine, as soon as I got out I hurried to check on the other side. The driver (a woman) was still sitting in the driver's seat, hands shaking and eyes full of tears. I immediately told her I'd call 911 right away; she nodded, and I think I saw her make a phone call too.

The police car and ambulance arrived in about 5–6 minutes. Very soon the woman's father arrived too (maybe her home was nearby).

The paramedics first came over to ask whether anyone in our car was hurt, then very quickly carried the woman into the ambulance and took her to hospital.

Next the police came over to find out how the accident happened, took the information they needed, then told me to go back to the car and wait patiently.

What happened next impressed me deeply.

First the officer wrote out my ticket, very patiently explained the whole handling process and what I had to do next, then told us the way to the hotel, and finally even shook my hand, as if trying to reassure me.

The woman's father had been nearby the whole time. At this point my wife went over to apologize to him, and he said accidents always happen, as if he too wanted to reassure us. I was really moved; not a single word of complaint.

Throughout, my family behaved very well: my wife helped a lot, and my son and daughter were both very calm.

That's how I got my first ticket in America. I hope there won't be another.
