A blunder?

Yesterday I looked again at the reports about Alibaba buying back the shares held by Yahoo, and suddenly realized that the buyback discussed at this shareholder meeting referred to buying back 1688 [Alibaba.com's listed shares]. I really shouldn't have got it wrong, since it was 1688's shareholder meeting in the first place.

Because right from the start lots of people were frantically asking what would happen to my Yahoo if there were a buyback, I took it for granted that they meant buying back the Alibaba Group shares held by Yahoo.

I wondered why Jack Ma was talking so big, saying the company had plenty of cash for buybacks; it turns out he meant buying back the 1688 part.

There should be many ways to buy back 1688; the only question is whether Yahoo sells or not. I think Yahoo may still sell, but the chance isn't very high, because Yahoo isn't short of cash right now, and selling means paying tax. The part Yahoo has already sold, as I recall, was the part Yahoo bought when 1688 listed.

[Translator's note: a passage quoted from blog reader maoshch's comment in the comment section stands here in the original; it is not Duan Yongping's words and is not translated.]

---- That's right too. Could Yahoo sell the 1688 part on its own? It certainly won't sell as a whole.

Looks like I've blundered once again.
