Panasonic

Long ago I said I wanted to write a little about my impressions of visiting Panasonic a long, long time ago (around '03), but I never seemed to find the mood to write it.

Panasonic influenced me greatly, and to this day I still respect Mr. Matsushita and the Panasonic company from my heart.

At Panasonic I saw two big Chinese characters, 素质 ["quality of character"]. I guess it's probably what our company calls "本分".

My overall feeling was that Panasonic is very well trained and still very strong; for us to reach Panasonic's level would probably take the efforts of many generations (and we may not reach it).

But I also really did see some problems, and I think over time these problems could be fatal.

Here's just one small example.

Back then we saw an opportunity in the mobile phone market, but were stuck because we couldn't get a license ourselves. At the same time we found that many foreign-brand phones in the Chinese market had obvious weaknesses. Add my understanding of Panasonic, and I had an idea: to find Panasonic as a partner to run the Chinese market together.

I roughly believed at the time that if we joined forces with Panasonic, it was very possible to reach 3rd or even 2nd place in China within a few years (I thought we definitely couldn't overtake Nokia any time soon), so I very much wanted to talk with Panasonic about our idea, and that's how my trip to Panasonic came about.

Interestingly, I first discovered that I didn't know whom to talk to for this to be effective, so I told everyone I met.

I met several section chiefs, several department heads and even the president. Apart from not getting a chance to tell the president at the time, I mentioned my idea to most people more or less. And yet, and yet not one person ever asked me why we thought we could reach the top 3 or even the top 2. It felt as if nobody cared about this.

So many years have passed; I don't think I've ever seen a Panasonic phone in the Chinese market again, and our phones have taken off.
