I played a round yesterday. My putting was terrible (37 putts) and the score wasn't great (78), but I had no doubles.

These days my highest goal in golf is to be double free. It's a bit like investing: make as few big mistakes as possible.

As long as you can do that, your score will always be passable.

My past records show that I only manage a double-free round about once a year; even the round where I shot 70 had a double in it.

This also shows that as long as you play, it's very hard not to make mistakes; what matters most is making few, and none that are fatal.
