Jack Ma: B2B faces huge challenges; going private is responsible to shareholders

My understanding:

1. The so-called Big Taobao strategy can't do without 1688, and a listed 1688 is definitely a constraint on this big strategy, because the shareholders behind the various related resources are different. Going private solves this problem completely.

2. Actually Alibaba really could have had the chance to buy it back at a cheaper price, and in fact they had already started doing so a while ago (back then they probably weren't yet planning to take it private). But that approach takes much longer, and once the intention to go private leaks out, the price gets pushed up a lot, so the current approach of cutting the knot with one stroke is very good.

3. Taking it private at the original IPO price should count as quite by the book. Shareholders who disagree can vote against it. If the votes against reach a certain share (I don't know what it is in Hong Kong; for US stocks it's 10%), this price won't pass, and the going-private deal may fail or need a higher price. I feel the chance of it not passing is very low. Those who think the price is low should definitely go vote against it; those who aren't shareholders shouldn't stir things up from the sidelines.

4. This going-private deal won't have any big effect on Yahoo's value; in fact I personally think in the long run it will raise the value of Yahoo's Asian assets.
