这残酷世界里的温柔

从北大折腾到美国求学,再从美国折腾回来创业,一路上的艰辛,只有自己心里清楚。在无数个漆黑的夜晚,我深深地认识到了这个世界的残酷。

Tenderness in This Cruel World

For the past ten years, I've been tossing about.

From Peking University I tossed my way to study in America, and then tossed my way back from America to start a business; the hardships along the way, only I myself know clearly. On countless pitch-black nights, I came to deeply recognize the cruelty of this world.

But I didn't give up, still less admit defeat, simply because, although this world is cruel, it also doesn't lack wisps of tenderness, just as in the night sky you can always find points of starlight guiding the traveler's road ahead. For me, Mr. Feng Lun (冯仑) is just such a morning star.

I first met Mr. Feng Lun at the interview for Hupan University. As a trustee of Hupan University, and one of the interviewers at the time, Mr. Feng Lun left a very deep impression on me. So when I was asked "what you want to do beyond money, or after making money", I excitedly poured out all my past thinking in one go, and passionately set out a founder's, a businessman's, sense of responsibility toward the world and society. This sense of responsibility fit Hupan University, which places more weight on values, and from then on I became a member of Hupan University.

At Hupan University, I had more opportunities to listen to Mr. Feng Lun's teaching. As a pioneer on the road of entrepreneurship and a representative of the first generation of private entrepreneurs since China's reform and opening up, Mr. Feng Lun has seen the cruelty of this world with his own eyes: countless outstanding entrepreneurs broke their halberds and sank in the sand in cruel competition for all kinds of reasons. At the same time, after that generation kept striving and struggling, creating more value and taking on more social responsibility, this world also repaid them with the greatest tenderness.

Precisely because he long ago experienced the cruelty and tenderness of the entrepreneurial process, Mr. Feng Lun is especially willing to lift up those who come after, and has never been stingy with any guidance for us juniors, helping us dodge countless mines and pits of starting a business.

Mr. Feng Lun is not only a good teacher who points the way for me, but also a steadfast friend on my entrepreneurial road. Last October, when my program 《财富自由革命之路》 ("The Revolutionary Road to Financial Freedom") began airing on Himalaya FM, Mr. Feng Lun generously agreed to my request and recorded a recommendation for the program, so that more people would notice my program.

Yesterday, my first book, 《这世界既残酷也温柔》 ("This World Is Both Cruel and Tender"), held its launch event. Mr. Feng Lun, a popular author who has already published several best-selling works, went so far as to cancel other events in Shenzhen and, sparing no effort, took a 6 a.m. flight to attend the launch in person and cheer me on, leaving me, a rookie author publishing a book for the first time, both grateful and apprehensive: grateful for Mr. Feng Lun's recognition and kindness, apprehensive that I, fresh out of the thatched hut, might only lower my teacher's standing.

Fortunately Mr. Feng Lun had no such worry; instead he spoke freely and at length on site, sharing more insights about starting a business. As Mr. Feng Lun said, the process of starting a business is full of the surging, the bewilderment, the striving and the loss brought by cruelty and tenderness, and they keep transforming into one another.

The cruelty of the world makes tenderness seem all the more precious, and tenderness also makes the cruelty one has lived through more valuable. What matters in this world is changing yourself; only when you've changed yourself will the world change because of you. We still need to be filled with more expectation, love and warmth toward the world, toward others and toward the future.

Perhaps it's precisely because there are still many people in this world like Mr. Feng Lun that the whole world can be so tender!
