Thank you to Chairman Ma Li for her remarks. Distinguished guests, good morning! Good morning, Ladies and gentlemen, Welcome to Beijing. [Translator's note: the second sentence is in English in the source.]
Welcome to the Global Ideas Feast: Artificial Intelligence and Human Civilization Forum, hosted by Toutiao. I sincerely thank the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, the School of Public Policy and Management at Tsinghua University, and the UNICRI Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics of the United Nations for their strong support. [Translator's note: the source names the UN body as 联合国UNICRI人工智能和机器中心, literally "UN UNICRI Centre for AI and Machines".]
Over the past 20 years, artificial intelligence has come step by step out of theory books into the real world. My original intention in founding Toutiao five years ago was to strengthen the connection between people and information in the information age. I believe the precondition and hallmark of civilization, CIVILIZATION, is the full circulation of information, and Toutiao was also one of the earliest companies to apply artificial intelligence technology at scale to information distribution. Our vision is to be "the information platform that knows you best, connecting people and information, promoting creation and exchange". When we talk about information, we're not only talking about stock market information, weather forecasts and traffic conditions; information is the encoding of all of human civilization, the sum of all thought and expression of humanity's history, today and future. Information is an important part of human civilization.
To realize our vision, we must solve three problems on a global scale. The first is the question of usage scenarios, which is essentially a market question. The second is the technical question: to what extent can artificial intelligence improve the signal-to-noise ratio of information dissemination? The third is the question of rules: in the process of connecting people and information, what exactly are the legal and ethical boundaries of artificial intelligence?
That's why we set the theme of today's forum as "Artificial Intelligence and Human Civilization". For Toutiao, we hope artificial intelligence can better serve the creation and exchange of information, thereby promoting exchange across all of human civilization, and we hope Toutiao becomes a more responsible high-tech company. For humanity as a whole, we hope that while embracing the huge opportunities artificial intelligence brings, together with the whole world, we also face up together to the uncertainty and risks artificial intelligence may bring to humanity.
I've always felt that AI engineering, aerospace engineering and genetic engineering are the three great leapfrog opportunities in the development of human civilization. These three great kinds of engineering will at the same time be the three great challenges to human ethics and human survival.
At present, AI is in the early stage of moving from the lab to large-scale commercialization, and many people have begun to worry about the economic, legal, security and ethical problems it brings.
For example, AI may cause mass unemployment; may cause unbalanced economic development; may widen the gap between rich and poor; may make many cities revise their current traffic laws; may completely upend traditional industries such as education and finance.
Fortunately, many of the risks are only just beginning to show. In this window of time racing against technology, we should advance technological R&D and research on its social impact together from a fairly early stage; at least I believe that is what a responsible artificial intelligence technology company should do.
In the PC internet era, Chinese internet companies were learners and followers of global internet technology; in the era of artificial intelligence, we see many Chinese technology companies beginning, at the application level, to approach and even reach the global leading level, becoming global leaders. But while we open up global markets, we also have an obligation to think actively, together with all sectors around the world, about the opportunities and risks new technology brings to the world, and to do things that bring well-being to users worldwide.
We hope our technology will ultimately benefit users worldwide. Realizing this wish is not something one company alone can do; it takes the joint effort of people in different fields around the world.
For Toutiao's artificial intelligence technology to ultimately benefit humanity, we need to pool the wisdom of the world's top AI experts, to help us broaden our horizons, advance the research and application of artificial intelligence and regulate its development, and bring more of the humanities into the application of artificial intelligence. Today, I'd like to use this conference to announce two things:
First, the establishment of the Toutiao Technology Strategy Committee. I'm deeply honored to have invited three scientists as the committee's first members: Turing Award winner Professor John E.Hopcroft; Professor Gao Wen, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and deputy director of the National Natural Science Foundation of China; and Professor Zhang Bo, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Second, the Toutiao Research Institute will launch a strategic cooperation with Tsinghua University's "Collaborative Innovation Center for Innovation Governance", to help build the national innovation governance system and jointly explore the challenges and impacts that artificial intelligence and other new technologies bring to the economy, society and innovation governance.
Distinguished leaders and scholars, to discuss the boundaries of artificial intelligence is to discuss the boundaries of human civilization. We can explore and debate the legal and ethical boundaries of artificial intelligence, but I believe that, as an artificial intelligence company, we should always hold to one principle: we must be full of responsibility and full of goodwill toward the future of all humanity.
Welcome again to you all. Thank you.
