**(Q)** Your personal transformation: what has it been like going from coder to group CEO?

Something I've felt recently: after using Douyin, I found that people actually have all kinds of lifestyles; on Douyin, many people show their own way of living. Since starting the company, I've come into contact with more and more people and more and more things, and have had all sorts of different experiences. When you do technical work your way of thinking is fairly fixed, but after starting a company you have to make products, and to make products you have to understand users, and to understand users you need to know the experiences of different users.

**(Q)** Any story of a change in your own lifestyle?

Actually, for a long time while using the product Douyin I didn't shoot videos myself; I generally chose only to watch and not shoot. Back then I thought this product was something young people played with, and if I played it, wasn't I too old? But later the team imposed a requirement internally: everyone on the management team had to shoot, and had to reach a certain number of likes to pass; if you didn't, you had to do push-ups. From then on, shooting Douyin videos was a big step for me.

**(Q)** You built Toutiao; how did you then turn to making social products?

As you just said, people have to change because of products, and also because of the industry: the industry evolving from text and pictures to video, from OGC to UGC; as an entrepreneur I need to keep up with the times. I also have another kind of change, which is changing along with the business. Many of my changes have been for the business; I've been pushed forward by the business to change.

**(Q)** You're already doing very well in China; why go into overseas markets?

Recently, when I was chatting with one of our product managers, he said his work now is a real blast, because working on overseas markets lets him come into contact with all kinds of users. Internally we have a WeChat group chat where every day we watch all sorts of videos posted by overseas users: one moment a video from Brazil, the next a video from Vietnam. You find the world is still very big, and from that, the boundaries of your personal life experience grow bigger too. In terms of personal lifestyle, working on overseas markets can broaden our horizons and experiences, and make life and our horizons more interesting.

**(Q)** If the cultural problems can be overcome, the overseas market will be wide open; how do you see it?

As I see it, there's both optimism and pessimism about developing overseas markets. In running product and technology, first we need to be more diligent, and second we need to be more meticulous in pursuing excellence. Yesterday we saw Elon Musk's giant aircraft project: tying two planes together and then launching a rocket from them. Overseas entrepreneurs are doing more thrilling, more interesting things. So from this point of view, it's not that overseas entrepreneurs don't do some of the startup projects we see; there may just be some differences.

Chinese entrepreneurs must not only go abroad; they also have to raise their capabilities. I hope Toutiao can become a global platform that, like Google, can have no boundaries. I hope that in the near future Toutiao can truly achieve this. Speaking for myself, whatever is more interesting and whatever has greater value to society is the most meaningful.
